The Seacoast Science Center has a reputation for helping launch careers in marine science or environmental education. The Center maintains several ongoing internship programs as well as seasonal and occasional permanent employment opportunities. Internships at the Seacoast Science Center are an exciting way to gain professional job training and work experience. Interns work side by side with professionals as Environmental Educators, Interpreters, or Marine Aquarists. Interns will receive training, and as their skill and understanding of the job responsibility increases, they will be given greater responsibility and more flexibility to set hours and define projects. Interns are expected to be highly motivated and able to work independently. Internships are non-paid positions. Specific internships are described below.
Marketing Internship
Marketing Interns work with Center's Marketing Coordinator and staff to promote the Center's assets, programs, services and products to its audiences. Marketing Interns' responsibilities include assisting with producing and distributing program flyers, monitoring local print media, planning and staffing special events, monitoring web site statistics and producing reports, and assisting with other projects as needed. The Marketing Intern must have superior communication and writing skills, computer skills and knowledge of public communication venues. The Marketing Intern must be detail oriented. Desktop publishing skills helpful, but not required.
Environmental Educator Internship
Environmental Educator Interns work directly with Center staff to develop and present environmental education programs interpreting the natural and cultural histories of Odiorne Point State Park. Educator Interns research, develop, and present new programs to Center visitors and school groups. Interns must be interested in environmental education, willing to learn its practical application in a public education center and be able and willing to present programs during high-density visitor periods on weekends and some weekdays.
Exhibit Interpreter Internship
Exhibit Interpreter Interns work directly with Center staff to further develop and implement interactive exhibits. Interns research information, create new interpretive materials to be used with our exhibits, and present these materials to visitors. Interns must be interested in environmental education, exhibit design, and interpretation, willing to learn the practical application of exhibit interpretation in a public education center and be able and willing to present materials during high-density visitor periods on weekends and some weekdays. Interns must have interest and/or background in environmental sciences, environmental education, or teaching. Internships typically last for a semester, and are based on academic requirements. Training is provided.
Marine Aquarist Internship
Marine Aquarist Interns work with Center staff to maintain the aquarium exhibits. Duties include the daily/weekly maintenance of the tanks, all life support equipment, and care of animals. Aquarist Interns help plan, develop, and set up new exhibits in the tanks, help collect specimens, and help develop husbandry methods for proper care of specimens. Interns must have biology, chemistry, marine science, natural resources, or zoology background with a strong interest in aquarist techniques.
Seasonal Naturalist
Seasonal Naturalists lead outdoor, interpretive ecology programs for school groups grades pre-K through 12. Applications are accepted throughout the year; hours are flexible and on an "as needed" basis. Applicants should possess general knowledge of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem, excellent verbal communication skills and great enthusiasm for the marine environment. Teaching experience is preferred. Training is required and provided for successful candidates. Applicants must be able to safely navigate the slippery rocky shore.
